Year 2011 Day 201 July 20: Nature and Creature Comforts

Day 201 Date:  Wednesday July 20, 2011 

Beginning Comments:

            For the last few days, my guidance seems to be pointing at nature.

            Here in my corner of Loveland, the rabbit population seems to be greater than any other place I have lived.

            At this time of year on morning walks, I would guess that I spot at least seven, though two days ago, I actually saw five of the “critters” chasing each other on somebody’s lawn over and above the “norm”.

            Then today I saw a medium sized black fox hightail itself across a four lane road, and also could smell the lingering “perfume” of skunk somewhere near the wild prairie that is cut by the four lane road.

            Last year, I also spent some time reporting on the levels of snow on the 14 thousand + footers which comprise the Front Range.

            Right now, on the third week of July, there are still significant strips on the peak outside Estes Park (in the Rocky Mountain National Forest), and strips of snow on most of the 14M+ footers all along the Front Range.

            As I mentioned last year, when we moved here in late June of 2007, all the peaks were bare except for one strip of snow on the mountain near Estes Park, which vanished in a few weeks.

            Last winter, the Rockies had record snow and a few ski resorts were still open on Memorial Day.

            It will be interesting to see if the snow vanishes completely before the mountains again begin to get snow (which could be less than two months from now).

            So, what’s this all about?

            I am not sure, but as I feel urged to focus on this subject, I am going to ask:

            Today, I am standing in Rocky Mountain National Park, high enough so that I can see the snow covered areas much closer.

            The place I am standing is by a roadside scenic view which sports rather scrubby evergreens, and has little chipmunks and squirrels running around far enough away from the human tourists to feel relatively safe.

            The air is warm, but a slight wind makes one feel chilly.

            I am not sure if I am standing at this place in real time or at some earlier time.

            Benjamin appears next to me and tells me that both are true.

            I ask him why the focus on nature and I feel his smile.

            “It is just a reminder to you that part of you is also a creature of nature, that your creaturehood still yearns for spaces free of manmade structures, though, being a creature, would also prefer connection with nature to be more comfortable than uncomfortable.

            This is the dilemma of your kind – that a need for comfort is extinguishing nature.

            Each wild creature you see and the raw beauty of the land about you, however, reminds you that nature is not always comfortable, nor is it supposed to be.”

            Benjamin squeezes my shoulder and disappears.  I telepath a thank you and return to normal consciousness.
