Year 2011 Day 175 June 24: An Exercise in Synchronicity

Day 175 Date: Friday June 24, 2011

Beginning Comments:

Thanks to errands I needed to run this morning, my message today is a little late.

Now, in response to my Wednesday message, one of my Australian subscribers sent a note telling me that all New Zealand flights were being cancelled because of volcanic ash.

That piqued my curiosity enough for an internet search.  It seems that the volcanic eruption from June 5 had recirculated through the atmosphere and was again creating havoc with plane schedules.

The next day, I checked the status of the flight which I would have been on if my tour had not been cancelled.   Sure enough, the flight had been cancelled, so who knows what would have happened with my tour.

Years ago, a mechanical failure of one plane cost all of us going to China an entire day of our tour but also gave us the opportunity to see Japan (which was not part of our itinerary).

But that adds a little mystery to my little probability adventure yesterday.

My guides suggested the trip (if not cancelled) would have been uneventful, but that would not have been true if there was a volcanic ash problem.

When one looks at probabilities, however, there are usually more than two of them, and some of them have a better chance of happening than others.

So my sense is that, in the order of probabilities, the tour being cancelled was one, the tour going on without incident was two, and the tour being thrown into chaos thanks to a volcanic ash clouds was three.

I am sure there are other probabilities, but at this point, I have better things to do than ponder them.

It is interesting that yesterday I also bought a book where the author spoke of having a trip cancelled which opened up the opportunity to meet people who advanced his research (something which had been on hold for some time), so one never can fully know the whys and wherefores of synchronistic events until all the events finally play out.

Right now I am really fascinated with synchronicity, as it seems, at some level which is almost hard to describe, that a number of us living in the here and now are hovering at a number of crossroads –personal, local, national and international - and the time to make choices is running out.

So what does the crossroads phenomena have to do with synchronicity?

I think that in many cases synchronistic events are manifestations of choices we have made, at a conscious level, a subconscious level, or both.

So the synchronistic event becomes either the road already chosen, or a ‘final’ time to choose.

Take the man whose trip cancelled out and who somehow ‘ran into’ the name of a person who finally helps promote his career:

He didn’t have to call the man; he could have decided to travel someplace else, or decided to stay home and work on some home project during his vacation time – or he could have spent that time sitting at a bar feeling sorry for himself.

Now, I doubt that person would have chosen the bar scene, but I add that as a possible choice to the synchronistic event which presented a crossroads

At this point, I am also thinking of a possible negative synchronistic event, such as the accident which actor Christopher Reeve experienced that made him into a quadriplegic.

In this probability at least, that was a crossroads with no possible reversal which then presented some very hard choices.  Christopher could have given up and died, succumbed to depression and lived out his years doing not much beyond feel sorry for himself, or use the horrible situation to promote awareness of handicapped people.

Though most people run into synchronistic opportunities (positive or negative) at various points in their life,  I wonder if those who are more willing or able to live in the present run into more of these events than most people.

Or are those synchronistic events presented to all of us fairly equally but those who are ‘conscious and aware’ are more likely to see them and work with them?

Energy Shift:

"Ashunayetya!

Today I find myself walking down Main Street in Doriville, where, to my amazement I see a roll of hundred dollar bills held together by a rubber band, lying on the sidewalk.

Without hesitation, I pick it up, and then wonder what I should do with it.

If this were physical reality, I know my first choice would be to see if I could locate the person who lost the money.

As this is my own creation, I realize that part of me left the money there so I know whose money it is.

As I thumb through the roll of bills, I realize it totals up to thousands of dollars.

So, what will I do with it?

Being a practical and caring kind of person, my first thought would be to tithe ten percent of it to charities of some sort.

That still leaves me with enough to generate a huge crossroads in my personal life.

My first reaction is immobilization – the cash is enough so that the number of choices presenting itself are almost limitless, and I really cannot choose what to do – not right away.

As I am dithering about this, Benjamin materializes and I ask him what this means.

Benjamin chuckles and replies, “What it means is that sometimes when one runs into a synchronistic event, one does not have to respond immediately.

There are exceptions, but in most cases, there is time for reflection before action.

Your culture has the unfortunate tendency to think that one must “act now”; much of it comes from the bombardment from your advertisers which champion the belief system that “he who hesitates is lost.”

As I said before, in certain circumstances, this kind of thinking makes sense, but in other circumstances, it leaves the individuals without the time and space to think through their choices so they are the healthiest they can be.

Not to have to make a decision immediately is, as a rule, a better choice than rushing into choices without the application of common sense.

Wisdom, by the way, is being able to discern which synchronistic events need immediate choices, and which can wait.

In the next few years, many will have the opportunity to practice this kind of wisdom.”

Benjamin’s words sound a little ominous to me, but I realize he is not about to expound on them.

Instead he bows, allows me time to thank him, and vanishes.

I still hold the roll of bills in my hand and cannot help but hope that they manifest physically – so what if I can’t decide what to do with them right away?  I’d rather have them in my reality than not.

Ending Comments:

This little exercise actually has triggered my imagination to think about what kinds of decisions I would make if my financial reality did change, all of a sudden, for the ‘significant better’.
